All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth

27 Jan

As little people, my Grandad used to sing that song to us and it’s been stuck in my head since last night. Toby is clearly a born optimist, believing he can walk already. This led to two bad falls yesterday: one at nursery, onto a table and one in the bath at home. And during one of these accidents, he managed to chip his front tooth.

I am devastated. Now every time he cracks a smile, I see cracked tooth. He used to have such a beautiful smile and now it’s been ruined. I’m probably over-reacting. The fact that we’re not sure when it happened and didn’t notice it until late last night indicates that it’s not that noticeable. Or that we’re very bad parents.  It’s really not a big deal, but from now on I will be tying him down in the bath.

The whole tooth incident makes me wonder how many more accidents are to come. Two in one day is a little extreme. The good thing is he doesn’t seem to cry. He just picks himself up and gets on with it. But given his lack of tears, I wonder if he is learning from his mistakes. I shouldn’t complain about his lack of fear, his quick recovery or his adventurous nature. It’ll make him an interesting adult, but I hope he learns to walk fast. I’m not sure my nerves can cope. And then we’ll be onto scootering, then cycling, and then driving…. he’s only got two sets of teeth (touch wood).
